VOLS DEFEAT SOUTH ALABAMA 31-24

VOLS IMPROVE TO 3-2 WITH A "WIN IS A WIN" OVER SOUTH ALABAMA

Knoxville, Tennessee  (HOUSEOFNEYLAND) The University of Tennessee Volunteers ran up an early lead, but then had to hold on as South Alabama gave them a run for their money.

The Tennessee "D" had to come through with a 4th Quarter STOP to preserve a 31-24 victory.

It was 4th and goal at the UT 8 yard line when a USA pass was intercepted by Brian Randolph.

At this point in the season, the VOLS were predicted to be 3-2.  They are 3-2.  Next week, the GEORGIA BULLDOGS will come to town licking their chops after defeating LSU in Athens.

Tennessee's "a win is a win" was nothing short of UGLY. UT mustered just 2 more 1st downs than USA and were outpassed 204 to 257 yards.

The VOLS managed to gain 90 more total yards than USA, 482-392.

The News-Sentinel's, Evan Woodberry, gave UT an overall grade of C with the bright spots being running backs, and the defensive line.

VOL fans are hoping that TEAM #117 under Coach Butch Jones will win one this year that they are not supposed to.  It would be great if that was against the Bulldogs this coming Saturday afternoon at Neyland, but given the performances of these two teams last Saturday, that has to be most unlikely.

VOLS RETURN HOME AFTER TOUGH ROAD LOSSES

VOLS RETURN HOME AFTER TWO TOUGH LOSSES ON THE ROAD

Knoxville, Tennessee  (HOUSEOFNEYLAND) The University of Tennessee Volunteers return to Neyland Stadium this coming Saturday after 2 tough losses on the road.

The BIG ORANGE will face South Alabama.  Kickoff is set for 12:31 p.m.

After getting two home victories over Austin Peay and Western Kentucky, the Vols traveled west to play the #2 Oregon Ducks.  The Quack Attack took care of business, VOLS 14, OREGON 59.

This past Saturday the VOLS were set back in Gainesville, VOLS 17, FLORIDA 31.

Although both the losses were predicted and expected, VOL fans can take heart that TEAM #117 never gave up and against the Gators showed signs of great promise.

A 1st quarter interception by Devaun Swafford turned into a PICK 6 covering 62 yards.  Michael Palardy kicked a 44 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter and Alton "Pig" Howard caught a TD pass from Justin Worley.

On defense, the VOLS were led by Brian Randolph who had 8 solo tackles followed closely by A.J. Johnson with 7 solo tackles.

The NEWS-SENTINEL gave UT an overall grade of "C".  Evan Woodbery writes...

"Although losses can cause fans to overreact, the past 2 weeks have gone exactly as most predicted they would.

The VOLS were overmatched in Oregon and failed to muster much offense against the Gators' staunch defense.

As (Coach) Jones said after the game, there really is no reason to panic.  The VOLS are 2-2, which is where they should be, even if it's not where they want to be."

VOLS BEAT WESTERN KENTUCKY 52-20

VOLS "IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME" GET 7 TURNOVERS IN WIN OVER WESTERN KENTUCKY

Knoxville, Tennessee  (HOUSEOFNEYLAND) With UT trailing 0-3 vs. Western Kentucky in the 2nd game of the 2013 season, the VOLS DEFENSE  "forced 5 turnovers on 6 possessions" resulting in 24 points on the way to a 52-20 victory here at Neyland Stadium.

The 1st turnover came on Justin Coleman's PICK SIX and was followed by another by Freshman corner Cameron Sutton.

Brandon Doughty added a 3rd INT followed by 2 fumble recoveries.

Early in the 2nd quarter the VOLS led 31-3 in a game in which UT was favored by a couple of touchdowns.

The Hilltoppers were coming off a 35-26 victory over Kentucky and many expected this to be a close game and a few predicted an upset.

Western Kentucky, however, did produce 1 more First Down than the VOLS, 21-20 and 11 more Total Yards 393-382, but giving up 7 turnovers proved their undoing.

The VOLS leave the friendly confines of Neyland next week to face the high flying, top ranked OREGON DUCKS.

Oregon, which routed Virginia in Charlottesville yesterday 59-10, will most likely hold its #2 ranking behind Alabama going into next Saturday's game.

Many a highly ranked Tennessee team has traveled to the West Coast and not come home with a victory.

Next week, the VOLS will be over matched and a heavy underdog, but what we VOL fans expect is that this TEAM #171 coached by BUTCH JONES and STAFF will give 100% and when the final whistle blows, the DUCKS will know they have been in a good fight.

GO VOLS!

VOLS GET 800TH WIN

VOLS GET 800th WIN AS BUTCH JONES ERA BEGINS AT NEYLAND

Knoxville, Tennessee  (HOUSEOFNEYLAND) The University of Tennessee football program achieved a new pinnacle last night as it recorded its 800th win here at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

It was also the 1st game coached for the VOLS by Butch Jones.

Today's News-Sentinel characterizes it as a "WIN TO BUILD ON."

The opponent, Austin Peay, which was playing TENNESSEE for the 1st time in its 77 year history, was not expected to match up well with the VOLS.

Attendance was impressive: 97, 169.

Designated starting quarterback Justin Worley, who played only in the 1st half, engineered 6 touchdowns on 6 possessions.

He had 11 pass completions on 13 attempts for 104 yards and 3 TDs.

UT had 30 First Downs rushing & 19 passing.  Total yards on offense 447 and 7 of 11 successful 3rd down conversions.

Back-up quarterback Nathan Peterman took over in the 2nd half.

The offense played well, but so did the defense with 0 points allowed.  Also, there was not one single, solitary penalty committed by the BIG ORANGE.

After the game, Coach Jones said...

"We are going to get it right.  It's going to take some work but this is a truly special place."

Coach Neyland would be proud, particularly of the big goose egg on the opponent's side of the scoreboard.
