Bob Neyland was appointed to the United States Military Academy by congressman Sam Rayburn.
At ARMY he was a champion in baseball, boxing & football & he earned an engineering degree at MIT.
Neyland was a star pitcher for Army's baseball team, winning 35 games & he was starting end on Army's 1914 national championship team.
Neyland served as an aide to Douglas MacArthur after WWI.
After a brief assistant coaching stint at West Point, Bob Neyland came to Knoxville & in 1926 was appointed head football coach by Dean Doughtery.
The Dean counseled Neyland to "even the score" with UT arch rival Vanderbilt.
As head coach of the VOLS, Neyland recorded 173 wins, 31 losses & 12 ties for an astounding winning percentage of .829.
In his 1st 4 seasons, Neyland was 34-1-3 & in the 1st 7 61-2-5.
In 6 of his seasons, the VOLS were undefeated & his teams won 7 SEC championships & 4 national titles.
His 1939 national championship team outscored their opponents 212-0.
General Neyland died on March 28, 1962 in New Orleans. He was 70 years old.
